Adware

Installed by stealth on computers, Adware is software that causes disruptive and unwanted advertising to appear in various programs.

Bloatware

Unnecessary pre-installed advertising software and trial software.

Broadband

Broadband is the term applied to high-speed data transmission, such as cable, ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), and DSL (Digital Subscriber Line). Broadband technologies provide faster connections to the Internet than traditional dial-up services.

Firewall

A firewall is a system that secures a network, shielding it from access by unauthorised users. firewalls are usually implemented at a software level, e.g., in Microsoft Windows.

Hard Drive/Disk

Also known as the "hard disk" or "hard disk drive". It's a large non-volatile (meaning that data is stored when the computer is turned off) storage area with capacity for storing gigabytes of data, as well as the operating system. Usually known as the C-drive (C:) on a PC.

Memory/RAM

An acronym for Random Access Memory. RAM is used to hold programs while they are being executed, and data while it is being processed. RAM is also volatile, meaning that information written to RAM will disappear when the computer's power is turned off.
